Why isn’t my business showing up on Google Maps?

The three businesses in that little boxed section at the top of Google, the map pack, get the lion’s share of the calls. If you’re not there, it’s almost never bad luck. It’s usually one of a handful of fixable reasons. Here they are.

Your Google Business Profile isn’t finished

This is the most common one by a mile. Google can’t rank a profile it doesn’t trust, and it doesn’t trust a half-empty one. If your categories, service areas, hours, services and photos aren’t filled in properly, you’re asking to be skipped. Claim it, complete every field, and keep it current.

Your categories are wrong

Your primary category tells Google what you are. Get it wrong, or leave it too vague, and you won’t show up for the searches that matter. A “landscaper” and a “lawn care service” aren’t the same thing to Google. Pick the primary category that matches your bread-and-butter work, then add the relevant secondary ones.

You don’t have enough reviews, or they went quiet

Reviews are one of the biggest things the map pack rewards, and it’s not just the total that counts. Recency matters. A business getting a steady trickle of fresh reviews will outrank one with fifty reviews that all stopped two years ago. If your reviews dried up, your ranking probably followed.

Your details don’t match around the web

Google cross-checks your name, address and phone number against the rest of the internet, old directory listings, Facebook, Yelp, your own website. If your phone number says one thing here and another there, that inconsistency makes Google less sure you’re legit, and less likely to rank you. Get your details identical everywhere.

You’re simply too far from the searcher

Proximity is real. Someone searching “landscaper near me” from the far edge of your service area may just be too far away to see you in the pack. You can’t move the truck, but you can widen your reach with more reviews, a stronger profile, and dedicated location pages on your site for the towns you serve.
